In this journey of a combination of poems and songs, you will see how we hurt ourselves trying to be someone else and we should embrace ourselves and know that there will be many hard lessons to learn and it is only the journey of life. This anthology report has my own analysis of the poems and songs that I have chosen, there are many different ways that they could be analyzed. This is my way of showing my off my unique perspective and learning the lesson of being myself and accepting the fact that it is ok to not be like others.
Enjoy and please feel free to comment.

Epilogue
The list of poems and songs that I brought together to weave my anthology assignment, help me explain why we as human beings need to work on accepting who we really are and stop trying to be like other people. The poems and songs were put in the order that they are in to show that pretty hurts, we need to learn to love ourselves and in doing we are only this bumpy roller coaster ride called life, we need to remember who we were and do our best to better ourselves, we are golden as we begin our lives over again as someone who has learned from their mistakes.
As I Began to Love Myself- Charlie Chaplin
As I began to love myself I found that anguish and emotional suffering are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth.
Today, I know, this is “AUTHENTICITY“.
As I began to love myself I understood how much it can offend somebody as I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this person was me.
Today I call it “RESPECT“.
As I began to love myself I stopped craving for a different life, and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow.
Today I call it “Maturity“.
As I began to love myself I understood that at any circumstance, I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens at the exactly right moment, so I could be calm.
Today I call it “SELF-CONFIDENCE“.
As I began to love myself I quit steeling my own time, and I stopped designing huge projects for the future. Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in my own rhythm.
Today I call it “SIMPLICITY“.
As I began to love myself I freed myself of anything that is no good for my health – food, people, things, situations, and everything the drew me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude a healthy egoism.
Today I know it is “LOVE OF ONESELF“.
As I began to love myself I quit trying to always be right, and ever since I was wrong less of the time.
Today I discovered that is “MODESTY“.
As I began to love myself I refused to go on living in the past and worry about the future. Now, I only live for the moment, where EVERYTHING is happening.
Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it “FULFILLMENT“.
As I began to love myself I recognized that my mind can disturb me and it can make me sick. But As I connected it to my heart, my mind became a valuable ally.
Today I call this connection “WISDOM OF THE HEART“.
We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing new worlds are born.
Today I know THAT IS “LIFE“!
I wanted to end my assignment with this poem, because Chaplin states all of the problems he has experience and has overcome and at the end of each stanza he gives a bold word or short phrase explaining what the problems have helped him accomplish.
Chaplin has learned to love himself for who he is gaining authenticity, he has learned that it is okay to have an ego, leaning to "love of oneself". Chaplin has learned not be afraid of the road blocks that come his way but has learned to embrace them and know that it is just "LIFE".
The font represented in this poem let's the audience know that the lessons that we learn in the world are bolding and exciting, (the last word/short phrase in the stanza) and the leading up to the lesson is long, boring and can be difficult to enjoy (the rest of the stanza).

Gold- Britt Nicole
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
You were walking on the moon, now you're feeling low
What they said wasn't true, you're beautiful
Sticks and stones break your bones, I know what you're feeling
Words like those won't steal your glow, you're one in a million
This, this is for all the girls, boys all over the world
Whatever you've been told, you're worth more than gold
So hold your head up high, it's your time to shine
From the inside out it shows, you're worth more than gold
(Gold gold, you're gold)
You're worth more than gold
(Gold gold, you're gold)
When everybody keeps score, afraid you're gonna lose
Just ignore they don't know the real you
All the rain in the sky can't put out your fire
Of all the stars out tonight, you shine brighter
This, this is for all the girls, boys all over the world
Whatever you've been told, you're worth more than gold
So hold your head up high, it's your time to shine
From the inside out it shows, you're worth more than gold
(Gold gold, you're gold)
You're worth more than gold
(Gold gold, you're gold)
So don't let anybody tell you that you're not loved
And don't let anybody tell you that you're not enough
Yeah there are days that we all feel like we're messed up
But the truth is that we're all diamonds in the rough
So don't be ashamed to wear your crown
You're a king you're a queen inside and out
You glow like the moon, you shine like the stars
This is for you, wherever you are
Oh, oh, yeah, yeah, oh, oh,
You're gold
This, this is for all the girls, boys all over the world
Whatever you've been told, you're worth more than gold
(So hold your head) So hold your head up high,
It's your time to shine
From the inside out it shows, you're worth more than gold
(Gold gold, you're gold)
You're worth more than gold
(Gold gold you're gold)

This song is great telling people that no matter what you are going through that you are "gold". She tells young children that no matter what they have been told until the point of listening to the song, that they are, "worth more than gold".
The similes that Nicole compares her audience to are big and appreciated things of world. "You glow like the moon, you shine like a star", these comparisons shows her audience that they are important, no matter what others may say. The word choice, "gold" that Britt chose makes one feel full of worth in a world that everyone appreciates.
Be Yourself- Ellen Bailey
Why would you want to be someone else
When you could be better by being yourself
Why pretend to be someone you are not
When you have something they haven't got
Cheating yourself of the life you have to live
Deprives others of that only which you can give
You have much more to offer by being just you
Than walking around in someone else's shoes
Trying to live the life of another is a mistake
It is a masquerade; nothing more than a fake
Be yourself and let your qualities show through
Others will love you more for being just you
Remember that God loves you just as you are
To Him you are already a bright shining star
Family and friends will love you more too
If you spent time practicing just being you
Bailey starts her poem off with a question, "Why would you want to be someone else", this implied rhetorical questions makes the audience think why they would have ever thought they would want to be someone else. After asking her question she makes her audience feel better with the next line, "When you could be better by being yourself", she tells her audience there isn't a point, in trying to being like someone else because you are a better you, just being you.
Ellen follows a pattern, of putting the audience down in a way in the first line of every stanza. And in the second line showing the audience of how great they already are. She continually shows us that we can offer the world things that no other person can, in the same unique way that we did.
Bailey let's her audience know in the last line of her poem, "If you spent time practicing just being you", that being you will not just happen over night and that you must practice.

I Remember Me- Jennifer Hudson
I remember me, starting at myself
See these same two eyes, see these same two feet
I remember you, You who I used to be
You still look the same, but you don't hurt like me
Look at my reflection, somewhere my affection
Disappeared, isn't here, nothing left to say
Memories they fading, but I'm the one who makes them
But i keep the love close to enough to say
What if this life is all that we're given
We just can't stop living, scared of what we see
Cuz in this world, anything can hurt you
They push you, then forget you
Stole my history
But I remember me, I remember me
It don't matter where I go, what I'm told, now you know
I remember me, I remember me
Even if I say goodbye, start to cry, do or die
I remember me
I tell you what my name is
And ain't nothing gon' change it
Cuz what you are is what you are
Even if your memory's flawed
I go to places, trying to find familiar faces
They don't show, but I still know
They don't have to look for me
I dream about, I dream about
The place where all the broken pieces fit together
Cuz in this world, anything can hurt you
They push you, then forget you
And stole my history
But I remember me, I remember me
It don't matter where I go, what I'm told, now you know
I remember me, I remember me
Even if I say goodbye, start to cry, do or die
I remember me
Now all that's left of these hands, this breathe
I've said goodbye to so many things that tears wont cry
And I take this pain, This joy, and rain
Cuz all that matters now is
In this life anything can hurt you
Push you, then forget you
Erase your history
But I remember me, I remember me
It don't matter where I go, what I'm told, now you know
I remember me, I remember me
Even if I say goodbye, start to cry, do or die
I remember me
I remember me, oh woah
I remember me, I tell you what my name
I tell you what me name is
Do or die
"I Remember Me", is a song about someone telling themselves' that they remember the person they used to be, the person that was scared and insecure, the person that they are proud to say they no longer are.
The narrator is in first person but written in a different view point, so Hudson is actually writing to herself about herself. Anytime she has a reoccurring symptom of the old person she used to be she tells herself, " I remember me". Hudson didn't like the person she was and would not like to return to her old habits.
The repetition of the phrase, "I remember me", Hudson constantly reminds herself that she can now remember where she used to be and how far she has made it to where her negative thoughts, "stole my thoughts".

Journery of Life- Unkonwn Author
Do not undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others,
It is because we are different that each of us is special.
Do not set your goals by what other people deem important.
Only you know what is best for you.
Do not take for granted the things closest to your heart.
Cling to them as you would your life,
for without them, life is meaningless
Do not let your life slip through your fingers
By living in the past nor for the future.
By living your life one day at a time,
You live all the days of your life.
Do not give up when you still have something to give.
Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
It is a fragile thread that binds is to each other.
Do not be afraid to encounter risks.
It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
Do not shut out of your life by saying it is impossible to find.
The quickest way to receive love is to give love;
The fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly.
In addition, the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
Do not dismiss your dreams.
To be without dreams is to be without hope;
To be without hope is to be without purpose.
Do not run through life so fast that you forget
not only where you have been, but also where you are going.
Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way
I wish I knew who wrote this poem, so that I can put a name with a face and writing. This author grabs the attention of the audience in the first line. "Do not undermine your worth by comparing yourself to others", we are all full of worth in our own unique ways and we make ourselves look more and more worthless as we continue to compare ourselves to others.
This author compares a fragile piece of thread to breaking point that we all get to, this fragile piece of thread can break so easily if it were on it's own, but if it is surrounded by strong threads, they can help support the thread that is barely hanging on.
We are to learn to "encounter risks. it is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.", no will ever learn anything behind closed and sheltered doors. We will then learn to resent ourselves by doing so. Life is a journey, there are many bumps in the road , detours and many times that things will not go our way, but we are to "savor each step of the way".

Beautiful- Christina Aguilera
[Spoken]
Don't look at me
Every day is so wonderful
Then suddenly it's hard to breathe.
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed.
I am beautiful no matter what they say.
Words can't bring me down.
I am beautiful in every single way.
Yes, words can't bring me down... Oh no.
So don't you bring me down today.
To all your friends you're delirious,
So consumed in all your doom.
Trying hard to fill the emptiness.
The pieces gone, left the puzzle undone.
is that the way it is?
You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down....oh no
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down, oh, no
So don't you bring me down today...
No matter what we do
(no matter what we do)
No matter what we say
(no matter what we say)
We're the song inside the tune
Full of beautiful mistakes
And everywhere we go
(and everywhere we go)
The sun will always shine
(the sun will always, always shine)
And tomorrow we might wake on the other side
We are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes, words won't bring us down, no, no
We are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring us down, oh, no
So don't you bring me down today
Oh, yeah, don't you bring me down today, yeah, ooh
Don't you bring me down ooh... today
First off, I want to say I absolutely love this song and I get teary-eyed every time I hear it. Christina shows the world that they are beautiful, "in every single way" and that they shouldn't let words get to them and ruin their days. And no matter where we are the sun always comes up and that we should embrace the day that we have, "and tomorrow we might wake on the other side", there is always a chance for things the get better.
Christina shows that we get so consumed on our imperfections that we learn to fake what we would want our perfections to be and, "to your friends you are delirious, so consumed in all your doom" that our friends realize who we really are and wonder why we are so against seeing the great person we are.

I like the fact that Aguilera starts the song off by whispering, "Don't look at me". This diction gives the song a more personal and painful foreshadow of what the song will bring.

Myself- Edgar Albert Guest
I have to live with myself and so
I want to be fit for myself to know.
I want to be able as days go by,
always to look myself straight in the eye;
I don't want to stand with the setting sun
and hate myself for the things I have done.
I don't want to keep on a closet shelf
a lot of secrets about myself
and fool myself as I come and go
into thinking no one else will ever know
the kind of person I really am,
I don't want to dress up myself in sham.
I want to go out with my head erect
I want to deserve all men's respect;
but here in the struggle for fame and wealth
I want to be able to like myself.
I don't want to look at myself and know that
I am bluster and bluff and empty show.
I never can hide myself from me;
I see what others may never see;
I know what others may never know,
I never can fool myself and so,
whatever happens I want to be
self respecting and conscience free
The first person perspective make makes the poem more intimate right of the bat. Guest talks about how he hates himself for the things that he has done that can bring himself to think about what he has done. He knows that being true to himself means that he has to be truthful to others, starting with, "a lot of secrets about myself". Edgar realizes that he doesn't want to dress up and be someone that he is not, but he struggles "for fame and wealth". He longs to hold his head up high and be proud of himself.
Guest shows us what most of society today internally fight with themselves about on a daily basis. The title "Myself", shows that in order to do better in life and to be proud of oneself, one has to start framing and molding themselves into the people that they would like to be. They cannot go through life "putting on a sham" and blaming the world about the person that they have become. "I want to be self respecting and conscience free", I believe Edgar would like to accept himself as a person instead of making it a chore, thinking up reasons why he shouldn't be accepted.
Edgar vocabulary gives a different insight into the poem, " I want to deserve all men's respect", he does not want to "earn" men's respect he wants to deserve, meaning that he will learn to be confidant in himself and others will admire him for that. in admiration others will give him the respect that he "deserves".

Pretty Hurts- Beyonce
[Verse 1]:
Mama said, "You're a pretty girl.
What's in your head , it doesn't matter
Brush your hair, fix your teeth
What you wear is all that matters."
[Pre-Hook]:
Just another stage, pageant the pain away
This time I'm gonna take the crown
Without falling down, down, down
[Hook]:
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worst
Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts, pretty hurts
Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worst
We try to fix something but you can't fix what you can't see
It's the soul that needs the surgery
[Verse 2]:
Blonder hair, flat chest
TV says, "Bigger is better."
South beach, sugar free
Vogue says, "Thinner is better."
[Pre-Hook]
[Hook]
[Bridge]:
Ain't got no doctor or pill that can take the pain away
The pain's inside and nobody frees you from your body
It's the soul, it's the soul that needs the surgery
It's my soul that needs the surgery
Plastic smiles and denial can only take you so far
Then you break when the face façade leaves you in the dark
You left with shattered mirrors and the shards of a beautiful past
[Hook]
[Outro]:
When you're alone all by yourself (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
And you're lying in your bed (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Reflection stares right into you (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Are you happy with youself? (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
You stripped away the masquerade (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
The illusion has been shed (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Are you happy with yourself? (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
Are you happy with yourself? (pretty hurts, pretty hurts)
This song has such a strong affect on anyone, whether it be a male or female, who my listen to this song. Beyoncé wrote this song to show how much of an affect being "pretty" can physically and emotionally hurt someone. Young adults are going "under the knife", sticking their fingers down their throats, so that they may uphold the image that is recognized as pretty.
The repetition of the phrase "pretty hurts" that is expressed both throughout the song and especially in the Outro shows how much being "pretty" hurts. In the Outro Beyoncé gives a question, asking "are you happy with yourself?", as she encourages, "you stripped away the masquerade". Are people going to be happy when they just learn to be themselves and not follow what the media says is "pretty".
The music video helps present a visual aid to help those see exactly what people go through. Beyoncé presents an allusion of a beauty pageant, which is a great example of where self image is not appreciated by the contestants.
Beyoncé compares the smiles that people have permanently placed on their faces so that no one will know what they are really going through, as a "face façade". "The illusion has been shed", the illusion that one previews for the world should be deleted from their character and they should embrace their true personality and beauty.
